Bright lights in the dark sky as Edinburgh’s Christmas entertains

EdinburghsChristmas
It’s that time of year when it’s dark going to work and dark coming home, that is unless you work in the centre of Edinburgh where the city’s Christmas lights brighten up the sky.

I’m sure many of you pass by this sign a couple of times a day, it is above the Jenners end entrance to St Andrews Square, currently unrecognisable as it is in full Festive mode. Inside you will find fair ground rides shows and market stalls for all the family, not to mention an ice rink around the Melville monument.

Definitely make time to visit if you can, and let Edinburgh’s Christmas put you in the festive mood! Also… be sure to pop in to Mimi’s Cake Cabin for some delicious treats and warming coffee.

A festive trip on board The Royal Yacht Britannia

RoyalYachtBritannia_festiveDrawingRmToday the I took the Sketcher family for a festive trip aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, which is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal in Leith.

The ship was launched from the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank on 16 April, 1953. For over 44 years she served the Royal Family, travelling over one million miles to become the most famous ship in the world.

A floating museum I find seeing the cabins, engine and living rooms fascinating, especially just now as the whole ship has a festive sparkle. The Sketcher twins loved it too, now almost five they loved using the ‘speaking’ hand held boxes. Keying in the numbers of each room which then led to them being told a little history about the location.

The sketch above is from the very Christmassy Drawing Room on board, and the one below is the deck which curves around the ship.

Look out for Captain Bear on board too, count the furry toys as you travel around the attraction for a chance to win a family hamper from the Royal Yacht Britannia gift shop.

Edinburgh’s Royal Mile turned into a Street of Light

StreetofLight_2015_1Last night I attended the first showing of the Street of Light, as 60,000 bulbs lit up the famous cobbled high street in Edinburgh.

The huge (19m high) installation came to life as lights flashed in time to recordings of the Edinburgh Choral Union Choir. A series of illuminated arches cross over the Royal Mile and created a tunnel of bright light which thousands of wide eyed people slowly walked through.

I drew these sketches during the 20 minute show, the first from the entrance and the second from half way down. I loved being surrounded by the lights and festive music, and although busy it wasn’t too packed. I wouldn’t have any worries about taking the Sketcher Twins (aged 4) up to see the show, I’m sure they’d love it.

The Virgin Money Street of Light is supported by the Royal Mile Business Association and is part of Edinburgh’s St Andrew’s Day celebrations. The event will run daily until Christmas Eve, and is a free event although you should reserve a ticket at the link below to ensure entry in case it gets busy.

Coffee and sketching in Stockbridge, Edinburgh

Grounds CoffeeThis week I enjoyed a bit of drawing and a deliciously smooth flat white in Grounds of Stockbridge, Edinburgh’s newest coffee shop.

Situated on Deanhaugh Street by the Water of Leith the front window gives a delightful view of Stockbridge and is a great place to watch the busy folk of Edinburgh going about their business.

I’m glad to say they stock a great selection of cakes and sandwiches, with gluten free options and allergy-friendly foods from Grams of Edinburgh.

Pop in soon for a cuppa, and have a look at the great local art they have on their walls. Also you can now buy Edinburgh Sketcher Christmas cards there too!
