Workshop By The Sea

This month I was asked to run a workshop in beautiful North Berwick for the Scottish Seabird Centre’s annual Marine Fest.

It seems to be always sunny in North Berwick, such a beautiful seaside town on the east coast just an hour from Edinburgh. But it’s also a little windy, which I always forget!!

I arrived early and had a lovely look around before my eager sketchers arrived or a couple of hours where I share my tips for getting started with sketching and capturing the views around you with ink pens and watercolours.

It was great fun and we drew shells close up before heading around to the boats and sketching the Life buoy hanging on a beautiful stone harbour wall.

We ran out of time to sketch the boats so I stayed on after lunch and drew the fishing boat with the town’s hill ‘The Law’ in the background.

My next sketching workshop is this Saturday back in Edinburgh’s New Town and there are a few places left for this walk and draw session capturing some beautiful details and touching on a little perspective too. All abilities are welcome and I provide all the materials you will need.

Have a look at this link for more details and to book your place.

My finished drawing above and below as it was before I added the watercolour. I wasn’t sure whether to add the colour or not, what do you think?

Seaside Fish and chips

A weekend trip to the sea side and although it was a bit windy we sat in the sunshine and enjoyed some fish and chips looking out to Bass Rock.

Being Coeliac I cannot usually have a fish in batter as not all chippys serve a gluten free option. So it was a welcome surprise to see that the Rocketeer Restaurant in North Berwick did and I highly recommend their light and crispy batter.

The Sketcher family were in East Lothian for the day and decided to visit North Berwick for a walk along the beach and some lunch. How nice it is again to be able to travel further and eat out. Simple things that were once taken for granted, before the pandemic and lock down of 2020.

I look forward to heading out again along the coast and finding more relish foods along the way!

This sketch was drawn with a pencil and then watercolour added over the top.

Puffin Colourin’

PuffinColouring_photoThis year to kick off Puffin Festival 2016 the Scottish Seabird Centre is running a Schools Colouring Competition.

The Scottish Seabird Centre asked me to create a puffin illustration to be coloured in, which you can see above. I will also be judging the competition which has an amazing prize for the winning pupil. He/She will officially open Puffin Fest on Friday 20 May at 13:30. The winner will also receive free tickets for Puffin Fest and a trip on board the Puffin Express.

I’m looking forward to attending the 10 day festival in North Berwick which runs from 20th to 30th May, and running two sketching workshops in which you can learn some speed sketching skills in the beautiful harbour town. Book your ticket HERE. See the full programme of puffin-tastic events on during the ten days HERE.

So mention the competition to your school, and get colouring in – you can download the drawing and find out more details about the Scottish Seabird Centre’s Puffin Fest colouring competition HERE.

Fly along to North Berwick for Puffin Fest

PuffinFest_2014This week the sketcher family and I had a fantastic time at Puffin Fest at the Scottish  Seabird Centre in North Berwick.

Until the 26th May if you visit the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick you can celebrate in all things puffin. Promising fun, games, activities and events for the whole family the Sketcher family headed along the East coast full off excitement.

North Berwick beach is a favourite short trip of ours already, the beautiful beach, interesting wee shops and coffee houses to explore and  only 25 miles out of the city. Add to all that the cuteness of wee puffins and we were sold!

The Puffin Fest runs until 26th May so head there quickly to take part in all the puffin activities, we had lessons on how to draw a puffin, watched  birds on Bass Rock on huge screens and even took a boat out to Craigleith Island to see the wee darlings up close.

The twins loved it, almost as much as the ice cream on the beach afterwards! To find out more about the Puffin Fest activities and the seabird centre click on the link below.

Trip to the coast

NorthBerwickwebThe family and I took a drive down the East coast to North Berwick today. A lovely seaside town famous for its fish and chips, and the Scottish Seabird Centre, which was where we had lunch.

Just around the corner is the harbour where a row of well sheltered benches let the towns visitors sit in the sunshine and listen to the tinkle of the boats in the harbour. This was our view from the bench …. penned with a black fine liner and then a touch of colour from my Letraset felt tips.
