City sunrise on an icy day

Icy conditions and a clear wintry sky made for some stunning views on this mornings drive to school.

This particular view from just around the corner of my home is looking into the city, and you can just make out the Crags and Arthurs Seat to the right of the rising sun.

The ice on the roads gave everything a reflection which seemed to fade perfectly from greeny blues to fiery oranges. So much so that I actually put the watercolour wash down first on this piece, most unusual for me.

I faded the wash from the sun area out to the bottom right and then once dry I added the ink with a fountain pen. I like the results, the fade is keeping the colour range together and I think if I had added the colour second I would of touched up bits of orange here and there and ruined the simplicity.

Flowers In Reflection

As rain falls in Edinburgh, and thoughts lie in the East, beautiful reflections of blue and yellow catch my eye.

My latest #supportabusinesssketch is this lovely independent flower shop which always catches my eye when passing by.

This is Lorraine Graham Flowers at 45 Causewayside, Newington, they create beautiful unique bouquets and deliver throughout Edinburgh.

After visiting #VanGoghAlive recently I am seeing sunflowers all over the city, and with the war in Ukraine the colours of blue and yellow are jumping out at me where ever I go.

It may be raining but I’m feeling very lucky right now. Enjoy the reflections everyone.

Reflections of Edinburgh Fringe

This is the Teviot Row House, one of the student union buildings at the University of Edinburgh and throughout the Fringe Festival, the Gilded Balloon.

The building has eight performance spaces, eight bars, and a café and is the oldest purpose built student Union building in the world, having been opened in 1889.

As the Gilded Balloon each year in August the building is a showcase for comedy and performance arts.

I drew this sketch whilst waiting for a show at The McEwan Hall and the rain had just fallen, giving great reflections of the pink branding. It was drawn in my small landscape moleskin over two pages which is why it is so tall.

I love my morning coffee machine

Coffee MachineThis morning is International Coffee Day apparently, but in my house most days start with a visit to this machine.

You will often see me supping coffee in various wee outlets around the city, indeed it is where I honed my artistic skills and found my style so I have a lot to thank coffee shop outlets for. But once you have one of these machines in your home it is hard to appreciate coffee as much any where else.

We got this Nespresso machine when some good friends moved away and fortunately (for us) couldn’t take it with them. Also I am loving the reflections in my glass as it fills with espresso 🙂

Enjoy your cuppa today 🙂

Drawing done in black ink with a little watercolour as the second pod was flowing!
