Beauty around every corner in Edinburgh

It may not be the sunniest day in the capital and it seems winter is back for the time being, but that doesn’t stop the city’s beauty shining through.

Walking through through the north of Edinburgh this morning I walked along Wariston Road and under this stone bridge over the Water of Leith. The bridge once held part of the old railway and now a stretch of the Goldenacre cycle path.

Ducks swam closeby as I sketched my drawing in ink and watercolour using my super easy water brush.

After twenty minutes my hands were numb and I packed up, raced along Warriston Road to Cannonmills and the warmth of a delicious latte in Coffee Angel on Brandon Terrace.

The Café Royal, on West Register Street.

CafeRoyal_colourThe Café Royal is a true Edinburgh landmark, with its beautiful lines and exquisite stonework it has long been a building I have wanted to draw.

Designed by architect Robert Paterson the elegant stained glass and Victorian plaster work make this a stunning building, especially when light up at night which it was when I visited just before Christmas.

Although there is currently plenty of construction work going on around the building, I was glad to find out The Café Royal is listed and will be preserved for future generations to appreciate its beauty.

This drawing was created for a Christmas present commission in December, it measured 25cm square and cost £145. If you would like to discuss commissioning and original drawing email me here.

This sketch was made with black ink and watercolour, both the colour and a black only version can be purchased as a mounted print from just £19.50. Email me for more information.

Baking a delicious tiramisu thanks to the perfect recipe

Cookbook GF CoverI recently received this beautiful cookbook by Victoria Hall, a gluten free baker and restauranteur, and went straight to T for tiramisu.

Being a coeliac means eating a gluten free diet and although these days when most supermarkets have a ‘free from’ section this isn’t so hard, I am well accustomed to a very limited choice of desserts and pastries when eating out.

As chef Victoria cannot eat gluten herself she obviously knows the feeling of seeing the treats you cannot eat and has filled the book with such delights, from cherry backwells to chocolate eclaires. There is also a savoury section including a steak and ale pie which I might make at the weekend.

But first I chose the tiramisu, something I havent had for at least 5 years, when my diet changed. Many of of the ingredients I had already in the kitchen thanks to years of gluten free baking, some I had to ‘borrow’ (like the Tia Maria) in exchange for a slice of the finshed cake.

Cookbook GF Ingredients

The recipe was easy to follow and I like the way everything was made from scratch, no shop bought sponge fingers here! It took time but I felt a sense of achievement once I had it resting in the fridge.

And the resulting taste? Delicious, and that was the reaction from everyone who tried it. If you follow a gluten free diet or bake for someone who does then this is definitely the book for you.

Interesting lines across Chancelot Mill in Leith

Chancelot Mill blackYesterday I had a little time free so headed along to Leith in the car looking for interesting places to sketch.

I love how the telephone lines split away over the sketch from the wooden post. With the heavy dirty lines of the mill behind this makes for an appealing view, for me anyway 😉

It’s great to be able to capture Edinburgh landmarks such as this, places that everyone knows as a point on their journey home, or a place that holds memories of growing up close by. There are so many in Edinburgh and talking to people in the city you realise how much these buildings mean to them.

Chancelot Mill is a flour mill producing organic and non-organic flours, bakery pre-mixes, concentrates and sundries for the baking industry in Scotland and the North.

The above sketch was drawn with a 0.5 fine liner uni pen and I plan to have a few copies made on giclee art paper that I can then add watercolour too to create many individual pieces of art from this one sketch. Watch this space, I’ll let you know how I get on.
