New wooden postcards

Samples are coming, but which to put in the shop?

I’ve been so busy with weddings recently that my Edinburgh sketching has been pretty none existent. Although I have been working on these new designs for wooden postcards which I have just sent to have samples made from.

I love the feel of a wooden postcard, the strength and durability as well as the tactile nature of holding a piece of wood all appeals to me. And so I have been keen on adding to my current couple of cards I sell in town.

I have ordered a sample run of one of each design but need to narrow the list down from 8 to 4 as I need to buy in large numbers to make it profitable. I just can’t decide which ones to go with, which is your favourite?

Rising from the waters

I had a tour of the Ocean Mist in Leith today, the newly restored ship on the shore has a new level, and some impressive plans.

Owners Alan and Nadia Pedley hope to open for business before the end of the year, and although there is still plenty to do their whole family is pitching in and I am sure they will get there on time.

The décor inside is high end, tailored wood panelling and beautifully designed ironwork guides you around the three story floating hotel.

The finishing touches nod to the art deco style of the 1920’s, from when the ship had its hey day and throughout the hotel you will find links to the boats glorious past.

I can’t wait to return once the Ocean Mist is ready for guests, to have a whisky at the bar and to be transported to the luxurious past, without even leaving the dock.

This sketch I made after the tour, whilst enjoying a fine coffee from Custom Lane

Down by the Shore

TheShorea When asked recently if I could create a sketch down at The Shore in Leith I was very surprised to find I hadn’t done so already. This is an iconic view of the Shore, the beautiful cobbled streets and gabled ended tall houses by the harbour remind me of mainland Europe, Brugges or Amsterdam perhaps.

I was commissioned by a couple who were emigrating overseas and wanted a view of the area to remind them of home. The sketch turned out well, I was going to colour it but didn’t want to lose any of the detail or make it too dark, which can sometimes happen when I add watercolour. The couple were very pleased with the result and I wish them all the best with their move. I like the idea of my sketch hanging in another country, reminding them of Edinburgh.
