Tattoo arrives at Edinburgh’s Castle Wynd Steps

CastleWyndStepsThere is a iron structure growing out of the Edinburgh Castle ramparts.

If you look up towards Castle Rock just now no doubt you will see a number of cranes reaching up to the sky. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is coming to Edinburgh once again and with it the mighty structure of metal work which will play host to a 1000+ cast as the 65th tattoo celebrates Homecoming.

This view shows the start of the seating going up in the castle esplanade from the Castle Wynd Steps. Over 200,000 people will attend the tattoo this August and I am particularly excited as for the first time I will be amongst them.

One of three Leith cranes

LeithCraneYesterday I visited Leith and the three cranes that sit on Ocean Drive next to a casino.

I finally made time to sketch one of these three cranes which are home to many pigeons and seagulls. The three stand together and one day I will return to sketch all three, but for now this will do.

Below is a photo which shows my sketch with the three cranes. If anyone knows a little about their history then please let me know below.

A misty view of Princes Street Edinburgh

StGilesStViewA hazy day in Edinburgh yesterday, this a quick sketch from St Giles street looking down on Princes Street and the Gardens.

I had a meeting at Riddles Court yesterday, I’ll be sketching the interior before it is closed for restoration work later this year. But more of that later.

I had paid to park near the High Court on St Giles St and returned with twenty minutes still on my ticket. So I sketched this quick one from the railings overlooking Princes Street Gardens and the Scott Monument. I love how watercolours can give a hint of a shape without the detail, perfect on a misty day.

Pinnies and Poppy Seeds on St Mary’s Street

Pinnies_ColourThis week I sketched this lovely wee shop on St Mary’s Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Turn off the Royal Mile and follow your nose to this delightful wee shop selling scrumptious shortbread in wonderful flavours. By constantly experimenting with new flavours and interesting and creative ideas the wafts of lemon and fresh baking smells are worth the visit alone!

‘We want to bring the fun and excitement back to shortbread!’ says owner Jennifer. Stop by and have a look, and a sniff soon, and look out for the new EdinburghSketcher canvas bags soon to be on sale there too!

A field of light in St Andrew Square

FieldofLightThe Field of Light art installation currently in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.

Yesterday, whilst waiting for my ride on the Edinburgh Tram I sat in St Andrew Square and realised I hadn’t sketched the Field of Light, a wonderful art installation by Bruce Munro. I doodled this wee black ink sketch with watercolour wash whilst enjoying a coffee in the sunshine.

I know for many the Field of Light only comes to life in the dark, when each of the small ‘flower heads’ lights up to illuminate the area in swaying balls of colour. But for me I think I prefer it in the daylight, the heavy heads bobbling in the breeze creating a more realistic if slightly robotic summer meadow. What do you think?

Be sure to have a look before 27th April, when the Field will move on to another destination.

The trams arrive in Princes Street

Tram_PrincesStreet_ColourThe trams have arrived in Edinburgh city centre and look great, here is my misty day sketch from last week on Princes Street.

Although they have brought a lot of disruption and expense to the city over the past few years, as well as making some fairly treacherous cycle hazards in the form of those rails,  as soon as I saw them I loved them.  Almost ready for passengers, they are currently being tested along their route and are due to be available for people to ride on in early May.

It was great to see them trundling up and down Princes Street the other day, their electric whirr and lovely ‘clang clang’ bell will soon become part of the Edinburgh experience and I for one am pleased to see them.

A wee Scott Monument moment…

ScottMonumentThe Scott Monument in Edinburgh’s city centre, looking splendid as ever in the spring sunshine.

A passing sketch of the stunning Scott Monument for you today.  The Victorian Gothic structure stands in Princes Street Gardens as a monument to author Sir Walter Scott.

A statue of the writer and his dog, stands underneath the tower, which is the largest monument for any writer anywhere in the world. Look out for them next time you are in town and climb the 287 steps to the top and you will enjoy an breath taking views of the city.

Signs that Spring has sprung

Crocus_2014Looking for signs of spring today, and what better than these beautiful crocuses sketched in Edinburgh today.

I seem to have been scouring the embankments and park lands for weeks looking for these flourishes of colour which herald the new season and the promise of warmer weather ahead. And then all of a sudden they are everywhere, and so seems the sun this week. Long may it continue!!
