The Six Nations heats up this weekend

FlowerofScotlandThis afternoon Scotland take on England in the Six Nations for the Calcutta Cup, and a large amount of bragging rights.

With both teams coming from disappointing defeats this will be a hotly contested match, not that that was in doubt. Come on the Blues,  and sing loud and proud when you hear those words around Murrayfield.

The WhereArtI weekly sketch quiz – Scotland wide

WAI071013Hello and welcome to the first Scotland wide WhereArtI quiz. Usually limited to the boundaries of Edinburgh, on the first Monday of each month the WhereArtI sketch could be from anywhere in Scotland.

To celebrate going nationwide we have a fantastic prize for the first person to correctly name the building I have sketched. Two tickets for a bus tour to Loch Ness. The day trip from Edinburgh is a fantastic way to see some of the countries attractions, including Glencoe, Fort Augustus and Ben Nevis.

The rules are simple, each week I sketch a mystery location, all you have to do is tell me where I am. Can you place the sketch?

You can answer below, on facebook or twitter and also to keep an eye on the ES facebook page and twitter for clues throughout the day. Answers to come by this time tomorrow, and if you would like to donate a prize for the quiz get in touch HERE.

A trip to Loch Ness; Sketches from the NessBus

NessBus1

Yesterday I travelled to Loch Ness and back on board the NessBus, and these are my rough sketches from a great day out.

We left Edinburgh just after 8am and in the following 12 hours packed in an unbelievable amount of sights, sounds and history from this wonderful country.

As we pootled around Scotland in a wee orange bus our guide for the day told of battles both recent and ancient, of uprisings and massacres, of Clan origins and place name meanings.

The fact I felt the time had flown by even though we had covered a staggering 350 miles was testament to how we were looked after and kept busy with a packed itinerary. That and the fact a dram or two was had at the afternoon distillery tour!

These are my quick sketches from the day. I am going to create a bigger illustration using elements of these and photographs I took on the tour.

I wouldn’t usually show workings at this stage but I thought it might be interesting for you to see my rough work from the day, before the final sketch is completed.

Scottish tour for this mobile art gallery

ArtBusI spotted this bus beside the City Art Centre, on Market Street. Preparing to leave on a tour of Scotland, ‘The Travelling Gallery’ will be available in Edinburgh until Friday, 30th August.

Parked in a space which made me think it must of been lowered in by helicopter (well done driver!), the bus is a custom-built, contemporary art space. Inspired by the Year of Natural Scotland, the Travelling Gallery’s autumn exhibition presents an alternative view of the Scottish landscape, through works by artists with a diverse range of practices.

Supported by Creative Scotland, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the City of Edinburgh Council, the Travelling Gallery brings art to schools and communities throughout Scotland.
