Join in my fortnightly online workshops with Edinburgh artist Cassandra Harrison. These Zoom workshops will restart in the new year, on February 9th and then continue on the first and third Tuesday of every month, from 7pm – 8.15pm

Early morning walk along the Water Of Leith

This morning the kids and I decided to walk to school and afterwards I thought I’d keep on walking.

I’m lucky enough to live near the Water of Leith river that runs though the city and I joined it in St Stephens Park and headed along to Stockbridge.

This is the view from one of the walk bridges near to Canonmills and although I was caught in a shower half way through the rain stopped long enough for me to finish the sketch with watercolour.

Inspired to draw a small sketch each morning before beginning my work.

Whilst watching last nights TV – a catch up of the brilliant Grayson Perry’s Art Club on 4od and especially the feature on painter and sculptor Maggi Hambling who starts every day with a drawing to get in the rhythm, I was inspired to do the same.

So here is mine today, Mocha, my muse again. This time in pencil with a wee dash of watercolour. Now to my commissions. Have a great day 😊

Giving thanks to my trainers

I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed, busy and anxious lately. Not one thing to blame but getting out and getting a little exercise this morning has helped.

Just a little jog but I think it’s easy to get a little round up if you don’t let go.

Below are a few photos of the sketch coming together. I have never noticed the subtle stripes on these trainers before. Sketching something really makes you stop and take in what you are looking at. Good for the soul, or should that be sole 🙄🤣

I do have a handful of other jobs I should be doing but I think it is important to take time for yourself now and again.

I always say in my workshops, don’t forget about the final layer of shadow. Makes such a difference and gives a grounding to your drawing.

Can you tell me where I have sketched?

I was sheltering from the rain, looking out from inside.

Double strength lattes

I am trying to give up sweet treats during the day but seem to of replaced them with extra shot lattes!

This delicious coffee was made for me at Summerhall, the fantastic creative hub in the South of the city. Home to theatre, concerts, talks, workshops & more, there’s always something on and I love just soaking up the atmosphere there.

It’s like being back at art college.

I was there to pick up some prints from the in house printer, GicleeUK and also meet Mrs Sketcher for a bite to eat in the cafe.

No sweet treats though, just plenty of caffine!
