Today I sketched with a thicker pen, a marker almost. I thought it would make the result looser, more energetic and also force me into more confident strokes.
I like the effect, I imagine with a crowded street scene it would capture the movement and vibrancy, ideal for the festival in Edinburgh. Also it was much quicker, perfect for when time is precious (when isn’t it 🙂
The scene is Carlton Terrace, as the street curves around into Regent Terrace and towards Carlton Hill and Princes Street beyond.
After an early awakening at 4am the babies slept till 7.30 this morning. After another feed and a costume change this sketch finds them lying on their mat playing together. ~Now for my breakfast! And then out into the sunshine I think, what is everyone up to today in this glorious city?
No time for location sketching today, I am using my lunch hour to catch up on some work.
Instead here is a previous doodle of what todays lunch consisted of 🙂
This little stone house lies just outside the gates of Holyroodhouse Palace, although at one time would of made up part of the boundary wall around the King’s Privy Garden. Although it is called the ‘Queen Mary’s Bath House’ most experts agree it was unlikely to have been used as such, more credible is that the building was a summer house or pavilion for the Royals.
Earlier today I posted my pencil and pen sketch but here I have cleaned it up and scanned it into the laptop, adding a touch of green to differentiate the building from the trees.
– of todays sketch, the Bath House at Holyroodhouse Palace. More to come later, after I’ve cleaned it up and scanned it. Lovely day out there, I see ominous clouds in the distance though.
These three flags caught my eye as I walked up the mound in Edinburgh this morning. The building is home to HBOS and also one of Edinburgh’s more recent museums, the Museum on the Mound.
Free to enter and with a number of interesting bank related exhibits it’s a great place to take the kids, plus you can see what a million pounds in cash looks like.
A Sunday afternoon without mobiles and laptops was heaven, and where better to spend it than on the beach at Portobello. We had a great splash around with the twins at Portobello Swim Centre, albeit with a stressful changing episode (Edinburgh Leisure please note: having only 1 of the 3 family rooms available is not helpful)
I recommend the Beach House for a coffee and a delightful piece of home made cake, all with great views out to sea.
The sketch is the view from sitting on what appeared to be what was left of a washed away pier, like a thick wooden fence stretching out into the water.
I was in town yesterday with my brother, his wife and their child, Raymond, seen here in the pram. The rain was relentless but it didn’t stop us having a great day looking around the Old Town.
We were watching a young busker here entertaining the crowd with a guitar, after which we headed down the Mile to the Museum of Childhood. It’s a great place for reminiscing and even better it’s free and dry! 🙂

No sketch yet but in the mean time head on over to STV Edinburgh to see my weekly sketch column: http://local.stv.tv/edinburgh/news/21081-edinburgh-sketcher-weekly/
Looking down from the walkway above Victoria Street you get a great view of the way the narrow street curves down from George IV Bridge to cobbled square of the Grassmarket. The brightly painted restaurants, pubs and shops make up a postcard image of Edinburgh’s old town. One sadly my mono sketch doesn’t do justice to.
The street was busy with tourists and awash with sunshine this afternoon. I think I may of burnt my arm sketching this one 😉
