Victoria Street

Looking down from the walkway above Victoria Street you get a great view of the way the narrow street curves down from George IV Bridge to cobbled square of the Grassmarket. The brightly painted restaurants, pubs and shops make up a postcard image of Edinburgh’s old town. One sadly my mono sketch doesn’t do justice to.

The street was busy with tourists and awash with sunshine this afternoon.  I think I may of burnt my arm sketching this one 😉

Just a glimpse

They don’t all work out. This is a glimpse of the Castle through a housing estate from my journey to work.
This view caused me to stop my bike and pull out the pad. I liked the old of the castle with the new of the housing estate.
I’m not so pleased with the result, a little lob sided, a little messy and unfinished. But the daily sketch is what ever result I get that day, I’ll come back to draw this view another day, with a little more time.

Rain in the city

Morning sketch fans, more rain showers forecast for today across the city so I thought I’d draw a photo I took from the bus a couple of weeks ago when a monsoon like downpour hit Edinburgh. Here we are at the top of Leith Street turning onto Princes Street, before heading left on to the North Bridge.

Have fun dodging the showers today 😉

Anyone know who the statue of the horse and rider is for…?

Sick day

No sketching today as I was consigned to my bed with a killer migraine. So instead a look at Rubie, a horse portrait I have recently finished. I posted the pencil sketch a few days ago, but here is the final ink version plus one where I have added a contrasting coloured background.

I like both versions but what do you think? All comments welcome, really 😉

The Queen’s in

When the Royal Standard flag is flying high above the Palace of Holyroodhouse it can mean only one thing, the Queen is in residence. The other obvious clue to Royal occupancy is the high number of police in the area.

Today there are also a large amount of well dressed folk milling around because the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are holding a garden party within the grounds of the palace. You will notice my sketch is drawn from the outside of the gates 🙂

Summer came to Edinburgh

An absolutely gorgeous day here in Edinburgh today, not a cloud in the sky and my child’s thermometer measured 34.2 degrees in my garden. Honest. We four had a great day in our wee garden, my wife cut the grass and clipped the shrubs while I got to play with the twins.

I also made this watercolour sketch of them enjoying the sunshine. James is happy in his ‘bumbo’ seat as Zoe hits the ‘playgym’ behind. Soon after we took a walk down to Granton Harbour for a look at the boats, a great place to sketch on the docks. I bet there’s a lovely sunset down there about now.

Parliament visit

The Queen was in town today, although I missed her. By the time I arrived at the front of the Scottish Parliament, seen here, the barriers were being removed and the traffic let back onto the roads.

Still a fair few people around to see some of the events being held within, to mark the opening ceremony for the 4th session of The Scottsh Parliament.

I was sketching quickly, trying to catch the visitors hanging around. I feel this rough style captures their movement and energy well.
