Merry Christmas everyone, I hope you had a wonderful peaceful day.When I saw this beautiful red bicycle outside the Museum Of Modern Art earlier this week I though Santa was scouting out the city on two wheels.
The weather outside may be frightful but there are beautiful glimpses of the capital at Christmas around every corner.Yesterday was mixed weather wise to say the least. As I walked from west to south and then east before back to the west I was soaked, shone on and treated to some amazing dark skies with strong sun lit architecture making for stunning views of Edinburgh in the winter.
I kept stopping, unable to pass before I had either sketched, or snapped a wee photo to sketch from later. This view is from the bottom of the Mound looking across the square in front of the National Gallery towards Princes Street and the Scott Monument.
I’m a big fan of Edinburgh’s Christmas make over and love the views that combine those permanent city monuments and buildings with those features that are here for a just short period of time. Have a great weekend everyone and Merry Christmas.

Christmas and Hogmanay are just around the corner and Edinburgh is filling with revellers from around the world as the world’s best street party begins in earnest.To help you plan your journey the Lothian Buses Christmas Grotto Bus will be out tonight (Thursday 18th Dec) in Edinburgh at various locations. Look out for the bright yellow bus at St Andrews Square, the Grassmarket and Princes Street. There will be goodies on offer as well as timetables and night bus information to help you get about over Christmas and New Year safely.
Today’s sketch is from the Lothian Buses depot in Annandale Street, a beautiful building which has been home to Lothian Buses since 1926 and before that was an Industrial Hall.

Mixing new creative ideas with designs and scenarios from the original 1973 production, with rich sumptuous colours and heavy luxurious materials bring a lavish Victorian feel to the stage. Peter Darrell’s choreography is brought beautifully to life by the Scottish Ballet with Tchaikovsy’s famous music adding to the spell.
I sketched frantically unable to capture all I was seeing, as the stage continually transformed as if in a dream. Here are my doodles form the night but there was so much more. The final sketch below sees the Prince and the Fairy take to the stage as snowflakes begin to fall from the sky…

But here I am in a dimly lit theatre at the Assembly Roxy in Roxburgh Place, watching the magical, hypnotic Sáras Feijóo tell the tale of a brave soul, on a journey to find love. After receiving an invite to sketch at the dress rehearsal I feel privileged to find out about the show and given an insight into the production and planning of an independent show.

I’m a little late to the office today as I just had to sketch the snow falling in Granton this morning.Huge flakes and lots of them fell as the Sketcher family tucked into their breakfast. The toddler twins were amazed, excited and then a little disappointed as it is was all melting away!
Not to worry I said, I’m sure there is plenty more on it’s way.
TIP: The trick to sketching snow in pen (without pencil first) is to draw the snow before anything else, add all the snow flakes and then build the picture behind.

At a meeting with the Mercure hotels on Princes Street this week I noticed just how close the hotel is to the Big Wheel.I am currently in discussions with the Mercure Hotel in Princes Street about supplying my EdinburghSketcher cushions for their newly refurbished rooms, more of which I will tell you about soon. But while there I noticed what a great view they have of not only Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street but also the Christmas festival and the huge Big Wheel.
My sketch is from their dinning room where they take Christmas lunch and dinner bookings, I will definitely be back for a little people watching!! It’s a quick sketch in black ink with a rough watercolour wash.
Yesterday I was in town posting Christmas cards and dropping off commissions so grabbed a bite to eat in Caffe Nero on the Royal Mile.
A perfect spot to watch the Christmas shoppers and Edinburgh visitors walking up and down the High Street, this was my view from window seat whilst I ate my gluten free ham sandwich and brownie – yum 🙂
