Scottish wild flowers in Victoria Park

Flowers Victoria Park
There is a beautiful patch of wild looking flowers in Victoria Park running alongside the cycle path entrance and tunnel which runs under Craighall Road.

Yesterday I took and hour to capture a small selection in ink and watercolour. Drawing for me has always been a way of relaxing, of taking time out of an otherwise hectic day and to shut out the million and one things arguing for space in my head. Just for an hour or so this can be hugely beneficial and often causes a new perspective on things once I return from my ‘me time’.

I recommend you do the same, either with myself on one of my Sketcher Days or just on your own. Pick up a pad and pen and get creative!

Join me this Friday and on dates throughout September, October and November as I join up with creative hub Arienas Collective to run sketching workshops. For more information click HERE.

This drawing was drawn in a black fineliner with a watercolour wash added on location. The original has been sold but mounted prints are available from £19.50 HERE.

Speed Sketching in the New Town and the Portrait Gallery

Dublin StreetI am very pleased to announce new dates for my popular speed sketching workshops, this time in the New Town with Arienas Collective, a new creative hub in the heart of Edinburgh.

Join us as we explore Edinburgh’s New Town and Portrait Gallery with sketchbook in hand, using ink and watercolour to record our city tour.

For the first time we will take watercolours with us which will enable us to capture more of what we see and more time out drawing before we return to our New Town base for a cuppa.

You will take home your favourite drawing in a frame plus a number of other personal pieces documenting your journey, creating a lovely package of self made art as well as an improved confidence in your own ability.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This workshop will run as both a full and half day introductory class to speed sketching, and also as a half day advanced course where we will make a montage of a particular location using your sketches. It is also available as a private group booking for up to 10 people.

Please see the link below for more details and to book through Arienas Collective. I look forward to meeting and sketching with you soon.

Todays sketch was made using my new Spectrum Noir Artliners, very smooth to use and available in varying pointsize nibs as well as a brush version. I’m liking the sepia tone for building work too. Prices and availability can be found on the Crafters Companion website.

The World’s End on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Worlds End HighStDown at the bottom of the Royal Mile lies this famous public house, on the previous entrance and exit site to the city of Edinburgh.

Outside the pub on the street you can see brass cobbles marking the site of The Netherbow Port, the gate that guarded the city for around 400 years from the 1300’s to 1700’s. You had to pay to pass through the gate and many Edinburgh residents never did so, hence the gates nick name as the Worlds’ End.

This pub also features in Diana Gabaldon’s historical Outlander novels, and main characters Jamie and Claire make a visit. This illustration is one of many in my new book, ‘Midhope and more‘ cataloguing some of the Outlander filming locations around Edinburgh.

Cover in hand 750

Created in conjunction with Scottish touring company Mary’s Meanders, and with support from Edinburgh World Heritage and ETAG, the book combines a collection of sketches with an insight to the book and a little history about each of the filming locations. More information and to order a copy of this original gift for any Outlander fan, visit my Etsy shop HERE.
Book price: £9.99, plus postage.
