ES_WAI170417Happy Easter everyone, can you tell me where in Edinburgh I have sketched?

If so click the link below to email me your answer. I will pick a random winner from all correct answers on Tuesday morning, and they will go on to the ‘Winners wall’ for the month. At the end of the month those on the wall will be entered into a draw to receive a prize.

The prize for April is one of my brand new stone lithography prints of Edinburgh Castle, which I am currently creating in a class at Edinburgh Printmakers. Here is a photo of the prints so far.

The Tomb: Ancient Egyptian Burial

A new exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street tells the story of an ancient Egyptian tomb over 1000 years.

The exhibition which opens today and is open until September 3rd explores a tomb consructed in the great city of Thebes (modern day Luxor) shortly after the reign of Tutankhamun.

First built for the chief of police and his wife, it was looted and reused several times, leaving behind a collection of beautiful objects from various eras.

TheTomb mummy-case

Large pieces like the mummy-case (a detail of which I have drawn above) and intricate and delicate objects are displayed to give an insight into what the ancient Egyptians beliefs were and how they remebered the individual, protected thebody and spirit after death.

Below are a set of ‘Four Sons of Horus Amulets’ which measure around four inches in height and were placed in the tomb to protect the lungs, intestines, liver and stomach. Also below is a unique, full length, painted mummy shroud.

This exhibition is full of beautiful objects and a joy to look around and learn more about a facinating time in history.

Inspire your little ones with a trip to the Museum of Flight

A day of wonder for all the family, out at East Fortune Airfield.

The Sketcher family are regular visitors to the National Museums of Scotland on Chambers street and whilst there recently twin number one noticed, rather appropriately, a flyer for the Museum of Flight in East Fortune.

A place I had long thought of visiting and the February break seemed the ideal time to make the 45 minute drive East to the former Royal Air Force base.

East Fortune has a long been a training camp for young pilots and although no longer used as an airfield it is good to see the base is still teaching and inspiring visitors both young and old.

In the new military and civil aviation hangars, which opened last spring following a major redevelopment, you can find out how aeroplanes have helped to connect communities, allowing people to travel short distances more easily. The twins loved listening to personal stories from Highlanders and Islanders who use these flights regularly.

MuseumofFlight_propellerI remember Concord flying into Edinburgh on it’s final flight here around ten years ago and it was great to see her again and be able to take the kids on board, they loved seeing the cockpit and all those buttons – I can’t imagine trying to remember what they all do! Sitting in her own hangar surrounded by memorabilia, news cuttings and history films Concord was the star of the show.

The activity hangar full of experiments, simulators and interactive fun was a favourite for the twins, for me it was great to get so close to so many huge planes, and to sketch my way around too!

NationalMuseumScotland - india inkOn Edinburgh’s Chambers Street on the South side of the city lies the National Museum of Scotland.

In 2006 the two previously separate museums, the Victorian built Royal Museum and the Museum of Scotland joined together to become The National Museum of Scotland.

The sketch above shows the former Museum of Scotland, which was opened in 1998 and has a much more modern look than its neighbour thanks to architects Benson and Forsyth.

The tower entrance faces out towards the George IV Bridge, which is where I was standing to draw this image.

Edinburgh’s Street of Light

streetoflight-georgest_colourA splendid show in Edinburgh as the sun falls on the Street of Light.

This week we have had some stunning sunsets in the capital, and sun rises too as the weather stays mild and wet. I captured this one on George Street recently as the sun fell and the city began to sparkle with the bulbs of Edinburgh’s Christmas celebrations.

After last year’s successful Royal Mile residency for the Street Of Light the walk though light show has now moved to the West End of George Street.

It’s great to have Edinburgh’s Christmas stretching out to the West End as many of the markets and rides are in East Princes Street Gardens.

I recently took the family to the European Market but on a weekend the crowds are too squashed to be comfortable with little ones so it was nice to have the George Street attractions and the Scottish Market to visit instead.  (I recommend visiting the European Market mid week as we did, much easier to move around).

The Scottish Market in West George Street is a winter showcase of some of the best craft, food and drink that Scotland has to offer, and includes a favourite of mine: Mimi’s Bakehouse.

Both the Street of Light and the Scottish Market will be on George Street until Christmas Eve.

My sketch is drawn with black ink and a watercolour wash.
